Raw eggs, plastic bottles, plates, and even oranges...
In the area around Musashi-Kosugi Station (Nakahara Ward, Kawasaki City), which is becoming increasingly popular due to its excellent access to the city center, various objects are falling from a high-rise apartment building, terrifying pedestrians and nearby residents.
The Nakahara Police Station of the Kanagawa Prefectural Police is investigating the incidents under the Minor Offenses Act (dropping dangerous objects). However, most of the cases remain unsolved.
What is happening now in this "dream town," which ranks among the top five in "livable city rankings"?
■Looking Up
On the sidewalk in front of the apartment building where falling objects have been repeatedly discovered, during the daytime on weekdays, mothers with babies, housewives going shopping, and office workers frequently pass by.
During the morning commute and school hours, it is overflowing with people and bustling with activity.
This apartment building is close to Musashi-Kosugi Station, which is served by the JR Yokosuka Line, JR Nambu Line, and Tokyu Toyoko Line. Nearly 50-story high-rise apartment buildings also line the surrounding area. It is extremely difficult for pedestrians to notice and avoid falling objects.
■Unstoppable Falling Objects
The first falling object was confirmed on September 24th of last year. It started with a plate falling, and on the 27th of the same month, a plastic bottle containing liquid fell.
According to the Nakahara Police Station, after a "bang" sound, fragments of the plastic bottle and a yellow liquid were found scattered on the ground. In October and November of the same year, a total of 30 raw eggs were thrown from another nearby apartment building, and one incident occurred where an egg hit a female pedestrian.
Through questioning in the surrounding area, a male student from Keio University, then 22 years old, who lived in the same apartment building, was identified as a suspect. Since a raw egg fell right in front of the police officers who were staking out the building, he was referred to the public prosecutor's office in November for violating the Minor Offenses Act.
The university student confessed to the selfish motive of "being frustrated because my job hunting was unsuccessful." However, the investigation revealed that he was not involved in the other falling object incidents. The residents, who were initially relieved, continued to live in fear.
Since the beginning of this year, the situation has escalated further, as if mocking the residents' concerns.
On February 12, 2016, an alarm clock fell. On March 4 of the same year, a wire mesh from a pet cage fell. On March 12, an orange fell. These are believed to have fallen from the same apartment building from which plates and plastic bottles had previously fallen. There have been a total of five falling object incidents.

The Imari Police Station in Saga Prefecture arrested seven boys aged 17-18 from Imari City and Matsuura City, Nagasaki Prefecture, by December 24, 2016, on suspicion of obstructing official duties and property damage for making a false emergency call to dispatch a patrol car and then throwing eggs, tofu, and potatoes at the vehicle, damaging it.
The charges allege that on December 21, 2016, at 0:30 AM, the boys threw eggs, tofu, and other items at a patrol car driving below from an overpass on a national highway in Kurokawa-cho, Imari City.
According to the Imari Police Station, the seven boys were friends. One of them made a false 110 emergency call, claiming that "motorcycle noise is too loud," to summon a patrol car. When the patrol car arrived near the reported location, the boys threw the eggs and other items at it.
The patrol car sustained a total of 10 scratches, but the police officers inside were not injured.

The Karatsu Police Station re-arrested three boys—an 18-year-old part-time worker, a 16-year-old unemployed boy, and a 14-year-old junior high school student—all residents of Karatsu City, and arrested a 15-year-old unemployed boy on August 16, 2017, on suspicion of obstructing official duties.
The four are suspected of throwing eggs at two police cars on a national highway in Karatsu City around 4:05 AM and 4:30 AM on July 27, 2017.
The three who were re-arrested have admitted to the charges. The 15-year-old boy denies the charges, stating, "I was at the scene, but I didn't throw any eggs."
According to the police station, the police cars were conducting traffic enforcement against reckless driving, and it is believed that the four boys threw the eggs from the side of the national highway.
The three who were re-arrested had previously been arrested on August 5th on suspicion of stealing eggs from a supermarket in the city shortly before the incident.
