"THE NEWSREADER: UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT THERE'S NOWHERE TO HIDE" (2022, Australia) #2〜#6

Sábado, 14 de marzo de 2026:
At night, in my Japanese-style Washitsu room, I watched the following drama.
Recorded on a USB-HDD (registration number 3) connected to a DIGA (2017 model). Aired on BS12 on October 14, 2022, at 9:00 PM.
It was interesting. The script was excellent.

At night, in my Japanese-style room, I watched the following drama. Recorded on the same external HDD as above. Aired on BS12 on October 21, 2022, at 9:00 PM.
"The Newsreader" (same as above). Episode 3.

Sábado, 21 de marzo de 2026:
At night, in the Japanese-style room, I watched the following drama. Recorded on the same external HDD as above. Aired on BS12 on October 28, 2022, from 9:00 PM.
Friday's Killer Street "THE NEWSREADER: UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT THERE'S NOWHERE TO HIDE" (same as above). Episode 4.
The wife of an elderly male news anchor is a role model for wives. To protect her husband, she anticipates the "enemy's" moves and takes the initiative. It makes me think, "She should have become a politician's secretary."

Recorded on a USB-HDD (registration number 3) connected to a DIGA (2017 model). Aired on BS12 on November 4, 2022, at 9:00 PM.
Friday's Killer Street "THE NEWSREADER: UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT THERE'S NOWHERE TO HIDE" (2022, Australia. 6 episodes total. Original language: English. Japanese subtitles). Episode 5.
It was interesting. It's an excellent drama. But, given the subject matter, I can't comment further.
It seems that people who identify as "B" in LGBTQ+ (Bisexual) tend to be easily misunderstood, prejudiced, and hated by other "sexual minorities" such as LGTQ people.

 It was interesting.
I watched this drama thinking the theme was the inner conflicts, romantic relationships, interpersonal relationships of the staff of a popular news program broadcast during prime time on a major Australian television station and the behind-the-scenes workings of the mass media 40 years ago. However, at the end of the final episode, the true theme becomes clear (to use a currently popular term, "diversity").

"RED SKY" (2013, USA) 〜〜The world is not a Hollywood movie?

Martes, March 24, 2026:
I watched the following movie in my Japanese-style Washitsu room last night.
Recorded on a USB-HDD (registration number 3) connected to a DIGA (2017 model). Aired on BS Nippon Television on December 11, 2022, at 8:00 PM. Sunday Road Show "RED SKY" (2013, USA. Original language: English. Japanese subtitles).

 It was interesting.
It's not uncommon to find British and American films, or Japanese anime, that, when viewed years later, seem to have been 10, 20, 30 years, or even more, ahead of their time.
This film is one of them. While the film's theme is different from the "war of aggression against Iran" currently being waged by the United States, watching the opening scene makes one wonder if the filmmakers were predicting events 13 years later.

The actors involved in international politics—Russia, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Israel, Azerbaijan, and the CIA—are similar to the current situation.

Incidentally, a few days ago, the Qatari Minister of Education addressed the US President and the Israeli Prime Minister in a social media post.

「To Mr. Trump and Mr. Netanyahu: Stop speaking on our behalf. Stop using us to justify your agenda. We do not want to be "liberated" by you. We just want to be left alone.
  Stop inciting war.
Your failure in school and your Hollywood education are your own fault. It is not our responsibility.
The world is not a Hollywood movie.」

  https://www.gco.gov.qa/en/state-of-qatar/state-institutions/council-of-ministers/members-of-the-cabinet/minister-of-education-and-higher-education/

 Her point seems to be:
"Isn't it because the American president 'failed' in school that he received his education in Hollywood? But Hear (the Middle East) is not Hollywood. I hope Mr. Trump doesn't try to imitate Hollywood."

I don't know if President Trump was "educated" (had a significant influence on his formative years) by Hollywood movies.
I also don't know if he "failed" academically (meaning he didn't achieve the results he desired in academics, sports, music, art, extracurricular activities, etc?).

If "modern schools" or "modern education" are ultimately just places to standardize and homogenize the nation, bureaucratically imposing "discipline and training" so that men are destined for the military and corporate activities, and women for becoming good wives and mothers, then it can be said that individual talents can flourish outside of formal schooling.

Of course, we have much to learn from movies, dramas, documentaries, anime, and comics (not just Hollywood). Highbrow works of art aren't the only things that are beneficial for "education."

However, even if that's true in general, wouldn't Miss (or Mrs.) Lolwah Rashid Al-Khater's message resonate not only with people in the Middle East, but with people all over the world?

On the other hand, there is also a man (in Japan) who, using the same "Hollywood movies" analogy, criticize the Iranian government from the opposite perspective.

【Israel's Ambassador to Japan, Gilad Cohen, in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.】
March 10, 2026

Israel's Ambassador to Japan, Gilad Cohen, in an interview with the Mainichi Shimbun, expressed his view on the new Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, stating, "He is a very hardline leader who is continuing the radical line of his father."

The Ambassador added, "As long as he calls for the destruction of Israel, Israel cannot accept him." The ambassador emphasized that the conflict with Iran is a "fight for survival."

Israeli media, citing local officials, reported that "the Israeli government may kill the successor again."

Ambassador Cohen stated, "I will not comment on what we intend to do." He asserted that Mojtaba "supports the oppression of his own people. He is targeting Israel and other Gulf states and is trying to acquire nuclear weapons, just like his father."

Regarding the selection of the successor, the ambassador pointed out, "In Iran, one bad person after another comes along. Iran is like a Matryoshka doll (Russian folk art)."
He added, "I hope that one of the leaders who emerges from within the Matryoshka dolls will truly change the situation."

The ambassador to Japan stated, "To believe that negotiation and diplomacy are the only way to bring about world peace is a 'Fairytale Land' and 'Hollyw
ood World'." he declared.

"DESPERATE MEASURES" (1998, USA)

Miércoles, 25 de marzo de 2026:
At night, in my Japanese-style room, I watched the following movie.
Recorded on a USB-HDD (registration number 3) connected to a DIGA (2017 model). Aired on TV Tokyo on September 8, 2022, at 1:40 PM.
Afternoon Movie Showcase: "DESPERATE MEASURES" (1998, USA. Japanese dubbed).

 It was interesting.
I had seen this movie on television quite some time ago, but I had completely forgotten the plot, the faces of the cast, and even the title of the movie.

I was surprised to learn that the FBI has detailed blood information on all past and present inmates across the United States. HLA is information that cannot be obtained from a regular blood test taken during a health checkup in prison (what we usually call "blood type," such as A or AB, is the type of red blood cells). I don't know if that's really true, though.

In Japan, the Japan Bone Marrow Bank was established in December 1991 to mediate bone marrow donation for patients who, like the protagonist's son in this film, do not have blood relatives who can donate.

Even in present-day Japan, it is said that only about half of the patients waiting for a donor are able to receive a bone marrow transplant (BMT).

In recent years, transplants from parents with only one matching HLA set have been performed using immunosuppressive therapy. Cord blood transplants are also being performed.

However, if a bone marrow transplant is received from a donor with a partial HLA mismatch, there is a higher risk of complications such as a lack of white blood cell count after a certain period following the transplant, or a decrease in white blood cell count after an increase, as well as GVHD.

Even if the transplant is successful, there is a risk of rejection and Graft-Versus-Host Disease (GVHD), requiring treatment with immunosuppressants. Because it takes time for the immune system to recover, the risk of infection increases during that time.

On the other hand, bone marrow donors may experience complications from general anesthesia and puncture. Peripheral blood stem cell donors are at risk of complications associated with G-CSF injections and extracorporeal circulation of blood.

It seems that fundamentally solving the problem of donor shortage will be difficult. We may have no choice but to wait until regenerative medicine advances to the point where organs can be manufactured using one's own cells.
However, that seems to be more than half a century away.

The Death of Iran has been postponed for five days.

The threat to destroy Iran's infrastructure, including power plants, and massacre Iranian civilians (hospitals and welfare facilities would also be blacked out) has been postponed for five days.

President Trump had announced the Death of Iran 48 hours later (March 24, 8:44 AM Japan time) (from March 22).
"48 Hrs" (1982, USA)
"48 Hrs" (1982, USA) 😨

An Iranian negotiating partner, intimidated by President Trump's threat, called President Trump. He then had a "productive conversation" with the Iranian government's negotiating partner, postponing the infrastructure bombing for five days.

However, according to an official statement from the Iranian government, "the Iranian government has not negotiated with the United States, either directly or indirectly." The Iranian government claims that President Trump is spreading fake news on social media as a way to buy time and engage in "psychological warfare."

It is well known that Clausewitz, in "On War," argued that defense is the best method of attack. Clausewitz, having studied the Napoleonic Wars, emphasized the importance of defensive warfare.

Even in modern warfare, where air and nuclear power are crucial, the fundamental advantage of defensive warfare remains unchanged. The Ukrainian military has demonstrated the effectiveness of tactics that involve allowing the enemy to gain the initiative while simultaneously drawing them into one's own territory, thereby inflicting casualties.

In fact, the Iranian military is using inexpensive drones for unmanned attacks, depleting the US military's expensive interceptor missiles.

Unlike Iraq, which is mostly flat land, Iran's territory is protected by natural fortifications. It is difficult for foreign countries to deploy ground troops to Iran.

Furthermore, Iran has approximately 500 power plants linked together in a triangular pattern. If the US military were able to destroy most of Iran's power plants, the Iranian military would be unable to access its missile silos.

However, the main force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps is not located in Tehran, but deep in the vast mountainous region. It seems virtually impossible to force the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps to surrender through airstrikes alone.

To put it in extreme terms, even if the US military were to launch around 10 tactical nuclear weapons at major Iranian cities, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' ability to retaliate would remain intact. Considering the high morale of the Iranian people, they are highly likely to withstand air attacks (conversely, the morale of the US military is declining).

Even in modern warfare, air and naval forces are supplementary forces. It is difficult to achieve ultimate victory in war without deploying ground forces to seize enemy territory, not just through assassinations of key figures or airstrikes (cf. Julian S. Corbett, Some Principles of Maritime Strategy (Annapolis, MD: Naval Institute Press, 1988)).

In the Vietnam War, no matter how many airstrikes the US launched, they could not defeat the North Vietnamese army using guerrilla tactics. Conversely, in the Iraq War, the rapid deployment of ground forces led to the war ending quickly.

Venezuela, from the US perspective, is more like a "front door" than a "backyard," making it relatively easy to "subjugate" it. However, this should be considered a geopolitically exceptional case (Cuba, while struggling considerably, is still holding on).

Iraq and Iran have quite different geographical characteristics. Iran is vast, surrounded by mountains on all sides, and its major cities are interconnected in a network. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps is likely to launch guerrilla attacks from the surrounding mountains against invading US ground forces, potentially leading to a protracted war.

In short, Iran can be described as having a 360-degree "Kill Zone" covering its entire territory (cf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kill_zone).

Currently, the majority of MAGA idolize and believe in Mr. Trump as the "savior of humanity," and it is estimated that nearly 80% of Republican "supporters" (not Republicans) "support" the war against Iran (conversely, nearly 80% of Democratic "supporters" oppose the war against Iran, resulting in a close split in public opinion overall). While it's possible that agents from US intelligence agencies (presumably not the CIA) are using "SAKURA" to manipulate public opinion online, this is likely only a small part of the problem.

However, if US military casualties increase in the future, the above figures could change and potentially affect the midterm elections in the fall.

The US government may be hoping to use the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament as a negotiating partner to make the Iranian government a puppet, but many Iranian parliamentarians are former members of the Revolutionary Guard Corps. It will not be easy for the US government to bring about regime change (democratization) in Iran, or to turn the Iranian government into a US puppet regime (like the Venezuelan government).

Conversely, if Iran destroys the seawater filtration plants of neighboring countries and Israel, as it has warned, the situation will become desperate.

My prediction is that President Trump will either continue relentless airstrikes to delay the deployment of ground troops as much as possible, or conversely, declare victory unilaterally at an appropriate time and withdraw.

Iran denies talks with US following Trump’s remarks on ‘productive conversations’
Iranian source says ‘no dialogue’ with Washington as Trump announces pause in strikes on energy infrastructure
|23.03.2026 - Update : 23.03.2026

Iran denies talks with US following Trump’s remarks on ‘productive conversations’Iranian diplomats and the delegation are seen after the indirect talks between Iran and the US with Oman acting as mediator, with messages exchanged, in Geneva, Switzerland on February 26, 2026. The third round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the US, held in Geneva, Switzerland, with Oman acting as mediator, has been suspended.

Iran on Monday denied holding any talks with the US, contradicting remarks by US President Donald Trump that recent “productive conversations” had taken place between the two sides.

The semi-official Mehr news agency, citing an Iranian source, said there is “no dialogue” between Tehran and Washington.

The source said Trump’s comments were part of his efforts “to lower energy prices and buy time to implement military plans.”

The Iranian source acknowledged that regional countries have put forward initiatives aimed at reducing tensions.

“We are not the party that started this war, and all such demands should be directed to Washington,” he added.

Trump said Monday that he has ordered a 5-day postponement of all strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure, citing “very good and productive” talks with Tehran over the past two days.

“I am pleased to report that the United States of America and the country of Iran have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East,” Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social.

Trump added that based on the “tenor and tone of these in-depth, detailed, and constructive conversations, which [sic] will continue throughout the week," he has instructed the Department of Defense to postpone all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five-day period.

The pause is subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions, he added.

This comes as regional escalation has continued to flare since the US and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran on Feb. 28, killing so far over 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, along with Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure while disrupting global markets and aviation.

I AM PLEASED TO REPORT THAT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND THE COUNTRY OF IRAN, HAVE HAD, OVER THE LAST TWO DAYS, VERY GOOD AND PRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS REGARDING A COMPLETE AND TOTAL RESOLUTION OF OUR HOSTILITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST. BASED ON THE TENOR AND TONE OF THESE IN DEPTH, DETAILED, AND CONSTRUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS, WHICH WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE WEEK, I HAVE INSTRUCTED THE DEPARTMENT OF WAR TO POSTPONE ANY AND ALL MILITARY STRIKES AGAINST IRANIAN POWER PLANTS AND ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE FOR A FIVE DAY PERIOD, SUBJECT TO THE SUCCESS OF THE ONGOING MEETINGS AND DISCUSSIONS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP

"KOLONA" (Kosovo, 2012)

Lunes, 23 de marzo de 2026:
At night, in my Japanese-style room, I watched the following a short film.
Recorded on the built-in HDD of my DIGA (2017 model). Aired on BS12 on March 21, 2026, at 9:00 PM.
SATURDAY SHORT THEATER "KOLONA" (Kosovo, 2012, 23 minutes long, original language Albanian & Serbian, with Japanese subtitles).

An excellent film. The structure is superb.
"KOLONA" is Albanian. In English, it's "column," and in French, "COLONNE." According to the dictionary, it means "one or more lines of people or vehicles moving in the same direction."

A film based on a true story. It has such a sense of tension that it could be mistaken for a documentary.

The acting of the actors playing Serbian soldiers is also superb and makes them seem authentic.

It's unclear what purpose or benefit the Serbian soldiers' leaders had in making such choices (perhaps to use them as targets for new recruits' shooting practice?), but in reality, there may have been cases involving "wife and daughter," "wife and mother," "wife and sister," "son and daughter," or "multiple daughters."
Such war casualties are likely to remain largely unknown because they inflict deep psychological suffering and self-reproach on the victims (they are tormented by guilt and continue to blame themselves).

The Kosovo War took place from February 1998 to June 1999, for approximately 1 year and 4 months. During this period, the Yugoslav army carried out massacres as part of its ethnic cleansing operations, including:

 Lake Radonjić massacre
 Gornje Obrinje massacre
 Panda Bar massacre
 Bela Crkva massacre
 Krusha massacres
 Suva Reka massacre
 Izbica massacre
 Rezalla massacre
 Drenica massacres
 Podujevo massacre
 Poklek massacre
 Pastasel massacre
 Meja massacre
 Vushtrri massacre
 Ćuška massacre
 Staro Gracko massacre

 This many massacres occurred.
It is presumed that countless other killings, not "massacres," like those depicted in this film, were largely unrecorded.

On the other hand, NATO forces also carried out nearly 40,000 airstrikes against Serbian cities and other areas, committing "massacres" of civilians.

 Kosovo gained independence in 2008.
Both Japan and Taiwan recognized Kosovo as a state in the same year.

🐵 An orphaned Japanese monkey still seems be bullied.🐒

According to a news report on television last night, Mr. Punch, an orphaned Japanese monkey (belonging to the monkey enclosure at Ichikawa Municipal Zoological and Botanical Garden), has finally managed to separate from his orangutan (stuffed toy), and the orangutan is already gone.
This might have been a bit disappointing for IKEA.

However, the disadvantage of Mr. Punch's birth as an orphan remains unchanged, and he is still frequently bullied by other young male monkeys.

In Japanese macaque society, it is normal for an orphan, an outsider abandoned by their parents, to be ostracized and become a target of bullying. It is also normal for those with higher status and power to bully and dominate those below them within the strict hierarchical structure of their society. Otherwise, Japanese macaque society could not function.

The news of a baby Japanese macaque being bullied is being reported daily on prime-time news programs, even receiving special coverage, creating a nationwide uproar—a truly bizarre social phenomenon.

One theory suggests that, due to the Chinese government's dictator's orders to seize pandas, a replacement idol (advertising figurehead) for the zoo was needed. The "pitiful orphaned baby Japanese macaque" appeared as the convenient candidate, becoming a huge sensation.

Now, tourists from all over the world come to Ichikawa Municipal Zoo to see the orphaned Japanese macaque. For the Zoo, Mr. Punch has become a cash cow. The Zoo must be extremely grateful to the Chinese government's dictator.

It's truly heartbreaking to see Japanese people who see the orphaned macaque at the zoo sympathize with it, empathize with it, desperately support it, and post videos and photos on YouTube and Instagram daily. It's a truly strange phenomenon.

Am I the only Japanese person who thinks, "Isn't this something you guys have been doing every day since the beginning of your lives, whether at school or work, out of your own free will? Why would you need to pay money to go to the zoo and look at it?"

Felicidades Venezuela 🏆. Saludos a Venezuela 🍻

The WBC final will begin today (18th) at 9:00 (Japan time). Venezuela vs. America.

After such a horrific crime was committed on New Year's Day, who in the world would have thought that two months later, the two countries would be fighting in the WBC final?

In addition to having the world's strongest batting lineup, Venezuela also had a great pitching staff. They held the American batting lineup to three hits in nine innings.

It was a great match. It was the most heated and exciting final in WBC history.

The players on the American team were also great, and they tied the score with a dramatic home run in the bottom of the 8th inning. As expected from America.

However, the Venezuelan players had a unique atmosphere of spirit and tenacity, and were one step ahead of the American players in terms of mental energy.

Venezuelan players showed baseball fans around the world the pride, dignity and determination of the Venezuelan people.

NPB also has Venezuelan players, but I would like to see more promising players from Venezuela. We should have a lot to learn from them.

"Driving Miss Daisy" (1989, USA)

Martes, 17 de marzo de 2026:
At night, in my Japanese-style room, I watched the following film.
Recorded on a USB-HDD (registration number 3) connected to a DIGA (2017 model). Broadcast on NHK BS Premium (BS103) on February 27, 2023, at 9:00 PM.
Premium Cinema "Driving Miss Daisy" (1989, USA. Original language: English. Japanese subtitles).

 A masterpiece. Simply superb.
Watching this film in 2026 as a Japanese person, I felt that it was about 50 years ahead of its time.

There are many points to discuss, but (especially in Japan and America) given the current political and social circumstances, all of them are "heavy" issues (race, religion, discrimination, aging of social minorities, single-person elderly households, caregiving, etc.), and are all issues that I cannot comment on lightly.

WBC. Quarterfinals. The Venezuela vs. Japan game from the day before yesterday.
Venezuela is strong. The Venezuelan batting lineup is top-notch. All the players were brimming with fighting spirit. Their level of seriousness was on a different level than the Japanese players.
The Japanese team had a lineup full of Major Leaguers, but they seemed cautious about getting injured in the exhibition match, as it would be counterproductive if it affected their start in the Major League season. Frankly speaking, they lacked motivation.
The Venezuelan players had an incomparably stronger hunger for success.

Yesterday (Japan time), the USA defeated the Dominican Republic in the semifinals to advance to the final.

Today, if Venezuela defeats Italy in the semifinals, they will face the USA in the final. The whole world is watching their battle.

The Venezuela vs. Italy match starts at 9 AM Japan time today. The game will begin soon.

While I want Italy to do well, I really want to see Venezuela vs. the USA in the final.

As a side note, if Iran participates in the FIFA World Cup 2026 held in the USA and Canada (Mr. Trump said he "welcomes" them on the steps with the FIFA president, but two days later in a speech he said it was "not appropriate" for them to come to the USA because he couldn't guarantee the players' safety), and Iran finishes second in their group stage, and the USA (who are participating as the host nation) also finishes second, then Iran and the USA will face each other in the quarterfinals.
While people all over the world would want to see that match, the Iranian government has indicated its intention to boycott.

If Iran boycotts and Iraq takes its place (Italy and China also seem to want to participate), then, similar to the Iran case, if Iraq finishes second in their group stage, they could potentially face the USA in the quarterfinals.

What a strange twist of fate!

Watch what happens to these deranged scumbags today.

https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/116219996530067941

I'm pasting the original text as an image file because I don't want to be sued like the BBC for allegedly "falsifying" a portion of the text.

"for 47 years" likely means 47 years have passed since 1979, when Ayatollah Khomeini overthrew the corrupt monarchy and launched the "Iranian Revolution." The "47" is a play on words with the 47th president. Who noticed this numbering?

Perhaps due to my lack of English proficiency, I didn't understand the meaning of "scumbag."

After researching it online, I found that:

"Scumbag" is a combination of "scum" (meaning rubbish or foam) and "bag." This word is slang that began to be used in the United States around the 1960s-1970s. Originally used as a euphemism for a condom (used), it evolved into a derogatory term meaning "human scum" or "a very despicable person."

 That's what they say.

The French president is expected to project an image of "elegance," so if the president were to use such slang, their approval rating would likely plummet.

The British prime minister is expected to project an image of "intelligence," so if the prime minister were to use vulgar slang, they would likely be heavily criticized by parliament and the media.

The prime ministers of Germany and Canada are serious and don't even tell jokes, let alone use slang.

Japanese politicians, to begin with, have an abnormally (pathologically) low level of language ability.

Among the G7 countries, perhaps only the United States and Italy are "tolerant" enough to allow their leaders to use vulgar jokes and slang?

President Trump made countless offensive remarks during his four-year first term, yet he was re-elected. I don't know if it's because ordinary people felt a sense of familiarity with him, seeing him as a "nice guy we'd want to have a beer with," due to his mastery of slang and crude jokes, but it's certainly a phenomenon unique to America.

While his behavior might not be commendable, from my Japanese perspective, there's something about it that I envy.

"THE NEWSREADER: UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT THERE'S NOWHERE TO HIDE" (2022, Australia) #1

Viernes, 13 de marzo de 2026:
At night, I watched the following drama in my Japanese-style room.
Recorded on a USB-HDD (registration number 3) connected to a DIGA (2017 model). Aired on BS12 on October 7, 2022, at 9:00 PM.
Friday's Killer Street "THE NEWSREADER: UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT THERE'S NOWHERE TO HIDE" (2022, Australia. 6 episodes total. Original language: English. Japanese subtitles). Episode 1.

 Interesting.
I was amazed that they were using teleprompters in 1986. They trained with incredible attention to detail.

(This might give away my age, but...) Japanese news anchors at the time were all rigid and expressionless, reading their scripts mindlessly.
Even now, Japanese male news anchors haven't changed much. Their everyday lives and behavior are directly reflected on the television screen. They can only read their scripts monotonously, with a cyborg-like, expressionless face, just like in their everyday behavior.

In recent years, in Japan, too, news anchors standing while speaking has become mainstream, mimicking Western news programs. Japanese television stations, when someone starts doing something, quickly exhibit a totalitarian, conditioned reflex temperament of "follow the crowd," and every news program on every station, including NHK, starts doing the same thing.
 It's so typically Japanese.
But, this is merely a case of replacing the Great Buddha with a standing mannequin.

Due to such special circumstances, in Japan, idol-like girls fresh out of prestigious women's universities are popular as news anchors (Joshi-Ana). These women are not professional journalists; they completely lack the experience, skills, sense of mission, spirit, and rebelliousness of a journalist.
However, their idol-like talent allows them to attract high viewership ratings.

In recent years, female idols, actresses, and comedians have even been featured as news commentators. Just the other day, a young woman, around 22 years old who recently graduated from AKB48, was a "guest commentator" on a late-night news program on a commercial TV station (I find myself watching it too...).

Until recently, Shimada Shinsuke (stand-up comedian) hosted a Sunday morning news program (before his downfall due to his ties to the Yakuza), but more recently, Beat Takeshi (stand-up comedian) has been a regular commentator on a late-night news program on a commercial broadcasting.

In Japan, the line between daytime "wide-shows" aimed at housewives, the elderly, and middle-aged NEETs and (serious?) news programs has almost completely disappeared.

Ranking of winners and losers in the “Iran War”

As of March 6, 2026, here is my assessment of the outcome of the suddenly erupting "Iran War."

《Winners》
 1. Israel
 2. Saudi Arabia
 3. United States

《Losers》
 1. Russia
 2. China
 3. Japan
 4. South Korea
 5. India
 6. Lebanon
 7. Iran

《The outcome is still unclear》
   Ukraine

At this point, everyone should already understand that Israel is the biggest winner. The question is why the American president was manipulated by the Israeli prime minister. It's unlikely to be simply because "his eldest daughter's husband is Jewish."

The "Iran War" is sure to cause oil prices to soar for the time being. Oil-producing countries will benefit, at least in the short term.

In some cases, Russia could also benefit from rising oil prices and become a "winner" (reap the benefits). While China is not dependent on Russia, India and smaller countries in Central Asia and Eastern Europe are dependent on Russian crude oil, which could increase Russia's economic influence and political voice in these countries.

On the other hand, Russia has been dependent on Iran since the outbreak of the Ukraine war. If a pro-American regime were to emerge in Iran, Russia would lose its means of evading Western economic sanctions.

If Russia intends to continue the war against Ukraine without agreeing to the return of territories such as the Crimean Peninsula, a complete withdrawal from Ukrainian territory, payment of reparations, or the extradition of war criminals, Russia's "loss" of Iran could be a major disadvantage. The United States would likely take advantage of Russia's weaknesses in ceasefire negotiations for the Ukraine war.

However, for the United States (and Japan as well), the greatest strategic "enemy" is not Russia, but China. It is unlikely that Russia, which relies on primary industry, will become a superpower in the future. Even if Russia can manufacture terrifying new weapons that seem like something out of science fiction and intimidate neighboring countries, or operate secretly as an arms dealer, it will be difficult for it to unite anti-Western (anti-democratic) forces and demonstrate political and economic leadership.
From the perspective of the United States (and Japan as well), Russia is likely viewed not as an "enemy" but as a potential partner (for building a China containment network).

It will depend on the extent to which the Iranian government (president and military) and their successor (perhaps Ayatollah Khamenei's son?) can contain the IRGC and enter into negotiations with the United States, but if the IRGC turns all neighboring countries against each other, neighboring countries "join the war," and Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz, Japan and South Korea will become "defeated nations." Soaring prices will become unstoppable.

This could have an impact on the administration of Prime Minister Takaichi, who enjoys an astonishingly high approval rating. In some cases, it is not impossible that a political situation that pleases the Chinese government could emerge.

The timing of Israel and the United States' attack on Iran was opportune. Currently, neither Russia nor China can afford to provide military support to Iran, and they are preoccupied with their own affairs. Furthermore, because Iran (the Revolutionary Guard Corps) is allegedly responsible for the deaths of thousands of ordinary people who participated in anti-government demonstrations, the United States can raise the banner of justice and capitalize on the anti-government sentiment (anti-IRGC) among Iranian citizens.
If the United States were to weaken or neutralize the IRGC and successfully establish a pro-American regime in Iran (regime change), it could be said to have emerged victorious. However, conversely, if Iran (the Revolutionary Guard Corps) puts up a stronger-than-expected resistance, the Republican Party could suffer a defeat in the US midterm elections this fall. The president's approval rating could also fall further.

India, which relies on Russian crude oil, would be in a difficult position if Russia were to raise oil prices (using them as a bargaining chip to gain war support).

Lebanon's use of Hezbollah to confront Israel became the cause of its involvement in the "Iran War." The Lebanese people likely view Israel's actions as unreasonable barbarism, as they were subjected to a sudden, unilateral attack by Israel and their civilians were massacred. However, Israel is obsessed with the idea that it "cannot sleep peacefully" unless it exerts coercive control over the entire Middle East region through overwhelming military power, and believes it is waging a "just" war against potential terrorist groups.

I predict that Iran will successfully navigate this war, minimizing the losses of its "defeat" while maintaining the core of its political system. Iran must be aware that democratic camps exhibit political fragility in a "long-term war" (as was the case with the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Japan after the outbreak of the Ukraine War). Iran will likely seek to engage in a protracted war (a war of attrition) while gradually releasing its war resources, and wait for an opportunity to negotiate with the United States. If the "Iran War" were to drag on, soaring prices, economic turmoil, and tax increases could alienate the public (leading to falling approval ratings) in America's allies, leading to successive changes in government. Iran will likely be aiming for this.
If that happens, Iran's "defeat" may not be as severe.

The outcome of the Ukraine war is unclear. If Iran becomes more pro-American, it would deal a blow to Russia. However, as mentioned above, if Iran (the Revolutionary Guard Corps) persists and the war is prolonged, democratic governments are likely to come under pressure from their citizens due to factors such as soaring prices. When pressure to "stop supporting another country's war when we're going through such difficult times" is expressed in the form of approval ratings, democratic governments become weak.

At present, it is difficult to judge how a war with Iran will affect Ukraine.

The above "assessment" is made not from the perspective of right or wrong, but from the realities of international politics.
Personally, I do not consider Israel's actions to be "just." Not to mention the "accidental bombing" of an Iranian girls' elementary school, massacring nearly 200 female students and teachers, should be considered a war crime. I believe the FBI should investigate this case against all those involved, including CIA operatives. (I believe this can be treated as a murder case, rather than a "violation of international law." In Japanese criminal law theory, "mistake of objectivity" is said to not negate intent.)

However, no matter what I say, it may not resonate with people who say, "International law has nothing to do with me," or "We live in a world ruled by force."

"Haru's New Year" (Canada, 2018)

Viernes, 6 de marzo de 2026:
Last night, I watched the following movie in my Washitsu room.
It was recorded on a USB-HDD (registration number 3) connected to a DIGA (2017 model). It aired on BS12 on January 31, 2026, at 8:40 PM. SATURDAY SHORT THEATER "Haru's New Year" (Canada, 2018, 19 minutes long, original language in English and Japanese, with Japanese subtitles for the English portion).

We Japanese are not good at foreign languages. In Major League Baseball, the Olympics, and the Soccer World Cup, participants from countries other than Japan, young players and middle-aged and older staff, communicate normally with players, staff, and referees from various countries.
On the other hand, whenever I see Japanese people, they stick together only with other Japanese people and are unable to communicate with people from other countries. They turn their faces towards the ground or the feet of the other person (Japanese people cannot make eye contact with others), and only shake hands almost silently and expressionlessly. In interviews, coaches and athletes from other countries, even those from non-English speaking countries, routinely answer in English, but Japanese people speak in Japanese.

Even on the international political stage, in Japan's case, even the Foreign Minister cannot speak English. At gatherings of world leaders such as the G7 and G20, Japanese politicians are always isolated, sitting alone with their heads bowed, or simply smiling and silently turning their faces away in greeting (which gives the impression of rudeness...).

People of foreign descent born and raised in Japan (those with one or both parents having roots in countries other than Japan) also become typical "Japanese." Koreans, Chinese, North Koreans, and people from Southeast Asian countries often excel at foreign languages, displaying remarkable "foreign language talent" from a Japanese perspective. However, Koreans and Chinese residents in Japan, born and raised in Japan, become "ordinary Japanese." People of Indian, Sri Lankan, Vietnamese, Filipino (many of whom marry into rural Japanese farming families), and Thai descent, when they are born and raised in Japan, become "ordinary Japanese." Even those who are Caucasian or Black in appearance, when born and raised in Japan, develop the same level of foreign language proficiency as "ordinary Japanese."

This is a truly puzzling phenomenon. I am unable to provide a linguistic, cognitive, anthropological, sociological, or genetic analysis.

Some believers in "linguistic nationalism" might say, "That's fine," but the fact remains that Japanese people stand out. Above all, the limited opportunities for them to utilize their talents (singers, actors, etc.) are a great waste.

A long-standing historical analysis suggests that "because Japan has no history of colonial rule, Japanese people are poor at acquiring foreign languages." However, this theory has not yet been scientifically proven (based on historical and linguistic comparisons with countries that have experienced "colonial rule").

There is no evidence that Russians or the various ethnic groups of Central Asia are proficient in Mongolian. Ordinary Filipinos do not speak Spanish. In the "foreign dynasties" where northern nomadic tribes ruled the Han Chinese, a "Sinicization policy" was almost always adopted (the ruling ethnic group "assimilated" the ruled ethnic group).

While there is a connection between "colonial rule" under modern imperialism and linguistic "assimilation policies" (ethnic cleansing policies under the pretext of civilization), many cases cannot be explained solely by this.

🐵 A orphan Japanese monkey still seems alone. 🐒

Mother Japanese macaque abandonment of their children is a phenomenon that occasionally occurs in other zoos in Japan, so it should not be that unusual. However, people around the world who saw the baby Japanese macaque clinging to a stuffed orangutan and dragging it around on video likely empathized with him.

In the video, the stuffed animal appears to have no hair or breasts. Mr. Punch is about the same size as his mother, soft, and even in two or three months, he instinctively clings to warm objects and seems reluctant to let go of his "mother."

IKEA is making the most of Mr. Punch's advertising power. IKEA donated countless "orangutan stuffed animals" to Mr. Punch. Looking at the photos, there is a huge variety of "orangutans" in color, size, and facial features. It's unclear why dozens of different types of orangutans live inside a furniture store.
It will be interesting to see how Mr. Punch reacts if he is given one of these stuffed animals.

It is unclear whether Mr. Punch recognizes the faces or colors of stuffed animals. How would he react if he were given a Teddy Bear or a Hello Kitty stuffed animal?

In any case, considering his future, it seems he needs to be weaned off his stuffed animals, not just his parents, as soon as possible.

For now, it seems he's still sleeping alone with his IKEA stuffed animal. It may be some time before Mr. Punch is able to sit, sleep, and eat with his friends.

The Punch incident has been a great success for Ichikawa City Zoo and Botanical Garden's self-promotion. What's more, it has provided even greater global publicity. IKEA has now become something of an important "corporate sponsor" of Mr. Punch.

There is no IKEA where I live (there are apparently 54 stores in the US, but only 12 in Japan), so I have never been to an IKEA store, but I wonder why they sell orangutan stuffed animals?

Baby Japanese macaque "Punch"'s IKEA stuffed toy, which he uses as a parent, sells out worldwide (Japanese subtitles, February 24th)
February 25, 2026

Panch, a baby Japanese macaque abandoned by his mother at Ichikawa City Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Chiba Prefecture, has become a hot topic after clinging to an IKEA orangutan stuffed toy as a mother figure. The video has gone viral, causing the same type of stuffed toy to sell out in IKEA stores not only in Japan but also in Singapore and other countries (no narration).

Killing five birds with one stone:East Asia is caught in the crossfire of the Trump administration's China containment strategy.

Large castles from Japan's Sengoku period (not mountain castles, but flat castles built on flat land) were surrounded by two moats (Hori): an outer moat (Sotobori) and an inner moat (Uchibori). A moat is an artificially constructed pool of water, similar to a pond or swamp.
If the outer moat were filled in, it could pose a serious security risk to the castle's main enclosure (Honmaru).

The most famous example in Japanese history is the Winter Siege of Osaka. Due to a ploy by Tokugawa Ieyasu, Toyotomi Hideyori filled in the outer moat of Osaka Castle. This later forced a major change in the security policy of Osaka Castle (the Toyotomi clan), placing them at a severe disadvantage (Summer Siege of Osaka).

In modern international security strategies, the outer moat is the economy, while military power has an aspect of the inner moat.

The United States is implementing a strategy to fill in China's outer moat, using military force to gradually contain China's economy and starve it out.

Both the Venezuelan "drug" issue and the Iranian "uranium enrichment" issue can be seen as mere pretexts for the United States.

The problem would be if Iran were to blockade the northern Strait of Hormuz and prevent oil shipments from Iran's neighboring countries. This would likely harm not only China, but the entire East Asia region.

A US website has published a document quantifying the "world's dependence on the Strait of Hormuz." An excerpt is included below.

https://energynewsbeat.co/hormuz-dependency-by-country-a-critical-energy-chokepoint-under-scrutiny/

The ranking of key countries' import dependencies on oil transiting Hormuz (based on 2024-2025 data, as percentages of total crude oil imports) is as follows:

 Japan: 75%

 South Korea: 60%

 India: 50%

 China: 45-50%

European countries (this article is unclear whether this refers to EU member states (including Turkey), Western European countries, or all of Europe): 10-20% (varies by country)

 United States: 7-8%

Four countries (Japan, India, China, and South Korea) account for 75% of Hormuz oil flows.

The dependency on Hormuz LNG is as follows:

 China: 25-30%

 India: 20-25%

 South Korea: 15-20%

 Japan: 10-15%

 Europe: Approximately 10%

United States: "Negligible" and "Minimal imports from MEG."

Incidentally, this article makes the following points about the United States:

「United States: Minimal impact overall, with only 2% of consumption tied to Hormuz.」

In today's world, energy policies and transportation methods have become diversified, so it may be difficult to fully understand the country's energy dependence on the Middle East based on the figures from this single source. However, it is clear that Japan's dependence on the Middle East is exceptionally high among major countries.

Furthermore, according to the above statistics, Japan, China, India, and South Korea alone account for 75% of the crude oil transported through the Strait of Hormuz.

Although not mentioned in the source, the Israeli economy is not dependent on primary or secondary industries and enjoys a geographical advantage, so a closure of the Strait of Hormuz would likely not be of much concern to Israel.

In addition, it is Japanese companies that drive the Chinese economy. Japanese companies make money by exporting (reimporting) products manufactured in China to Japan or selling them to other countries such as the United States. While the results of these economic activities are reflected as "domestic" in the gross domestic product figures, which can be deceptive (China's GDP is roughly four times that of Japan, but this does not mean that China has an economic power four times that of Japan), the Chinese and Japanese economies are inextricably linked.

As such, Japan's 75% dependence and China's 50% dependence could be a double whammy for the Japanese economy.

From the Trump administration's perspective, this is a case of "killing five birds with one stone" (meaning that one stone can shoot down five birds). A single stone thrown with "Epic Fury" can knock down five large birds.

In short, Japan has failed in its economic security policy. As the saying goes, "expanding your basket" is the basis of security policy. "Expanding your basket" means diversifying. "Diversification" refers not only to the number of countries with which we export and import, but also to transportation methods and energy sources.

It's too late now to lament the fact that we shut down all of Japan's nuclear power plants, opposed wind power generation (I also oppose wind power generation on land, but not to building it at sea (as long as it doesn't affect fisheries)), and opposed solar power generation (since Japan would have to import solar panels from China, we would indirectly become dependent on China for our energy supply).

We should have diversified our sources of rare earth supplies and crude oil transportation routes much sooner.

Japan had no concept of economic security and was only concerned with making money in the moment. We didn't anticipate the worst-case scenario.
We will soon pay the price for that.

https://energynewsbeat.co/hormuz-dependency-by-country-a-critical-energy-chokepoint-under-scrutiny/
