I'm pasting the original text as an image file because I don't want to be sued like the BBC for allegedly "falsifying" a portion of the text.
"for 47 years" likely means 47 years have passed since 1979, when Ayatollah Khomeini overthrew the corrupt monarchy and launched the "Iranian Revolution." The "47" is a play on words with the 47th president. Who noticed this numbering?
Perhaps due to my lack of English proficiency, I didn't understand the meaning of "scumbag."
After researching it online, I found that:
"Scumbag" is a combination of "scum" (meaning rubbish or foam) and "bag." This word is slang that began to be used in the United States around the 1960s-1970s. Originally used as a euphemism for a condom (used), it evolved into a derogatory term meaning "human scum" or "a very despicable person."
That's what they say.
The French president is expected to project an image of "elegance," so if the president were to use such slang, their approval rating would likely plummet.
The British prime minister is expected to project an image of "intelligence," so if the prime minister were to use vulgar slang, they would likely be heavily criticized by parliament and the media.
The prime ministers of Germany and Canada are serious and don't even tell jokes, let alone use slang.
Japanese politicians, to begin with, have an abnormally (pathologically) low level of language ability.
Among the G7 countries, perhaps only the United States and Italy are "tolerant" enough to allow their leaders to use vulgar jokes and slang?
President Trump made countless offensive remarks during his four-year first term, yet he was re-elected. I don't know if it's because ordinary people felt a sense of familiarity with him, seeing him as a "nice guy you'd want to have a beer with," due to his mastery of slang and crude jokes, but it's certainly a phenomenon unique to America.
While his behavior might not be commendable, from my Japanese perspective, there's something about it that I envy.
