Fake Self-Defense Force (SDF) personnel have appeared in disaster-stricken areas. The top SDF officer in uniform expressed outrage. "This is an absolutely unacceptable act." How can one spot a fake? A warning was issued, emphasizing that "the SDF operates as an organization."

In the areas affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake, there have been sightings of fake SDF personnel. Regarding this, General Yoshida, Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff and top SDF officer in uniform, stated on January 11, 2024, "At a time when disaster victims are suffering so much, this is an absolutely unacceptable act," and urged caution.
In Anamizu Town, Ishikawa Prefecture, a fake SDF officer, disguised in camouflage uniform and posing as a needs assessment officer, was spotted. The town is warning residents to be vigilant against theft and other crimes.
At a press conference, Chief of Staff Yoshida explained that one way to distinguish between Self-Defense Forces personnel and non-Self-Defense Forces members is, "We operate as an organization, so we do not, for example, visit houses in isolated areas alone." He emphasized, "If necessary, we would like to issue warnings through local governments, and the Self-Defense Forces will also do so."
