US President Signs Executive Order Banning the Term "AI" 〜〜Will "SI" Catch On?

Throughout history, those in power have sought to reshape the world according to their own ideals by using language—a conceptual tool unique to humanity—to alter how people perceive reality.

While this is a common practice among those in power worldwide, in Japan, it tends to be carried out in a far more insidious manner. (Listing specific examples here would turn this into a lengthy academic paper.)

Compared to the underhanded tactics often seen in Japan, the US President’s approach—at least from a Japanese perspective—appears bold and ostensibly "legal" (achieved via an executive order; though whether this constitutes an abuse of power is a separate political question).

Regardless, attempting to replace the term "AI" with "SI" through a top-down, state-led initiative is simply not realistic. Even Prime Minister Takaichi has rejected the term "SI."

Online, both in the US and Japan, the proposal has been met with widespread mockery and resistance—likely because it is perceived as an unwelcome imposition.

Setting aside the broader debate over whether it is appropriate for political authorities to steer public "normative perceptions" by altering language—and to further codify these changes through "executive orders"—President Trump’s underlying argument does hold a certain logic. He contends that because the word "artificial" can carry connotations of being "fake," using the term "super-intelligence" (SI) might help avoid public misunderstanding—specifically, the apprehension or sense of crisis that the term "artificial intelligence" can evoke. His reasoning is, in its own way, coherent.

Had he proposed this a year earlier, perhaps "SI" might have actually taken root.

The White House considers anyone that uses the term, “Artificial Intelligence,” as opposed to the highly accepted new and more accurate term, “Super Intelligence,” THE ENEMY! President DONALD J. TRUMP
