Teacher Sprays Cockroach Insecticide on Students

Teacher Sprays Cockroach Insecticide on Students at an Elementary School in Jeju

It has come to light that a teacher at "H" Elementary School in Seogwipo, Jeju Province, sprayed cockroach insecticide on students during class.

According to information released on the 29th by "H" Elementary School and the Seogwipo Office of Education, a teacher identified as "J" (47)—who teaches specific subjects at the school—called one female student and three male students to the front of the classroom during a sixth-grade lesson. Frustrated that the students were not listening, the teacher scolded them while spraying cockroach insecticide—which happened to be in the classroom—on them.

The school confirmed that "it is true that teacher J sprayed cockroach insecticide on the students," but denied claims made by some students and parents that the teacher had insulted them by calling them "things lower than insects."

The school’s vice-principal stated, "Teacher J explained that after warning the students twice for failing to pay attention in class, they did not listen, so he sprayed the cockroach insecticide onto the lower parts of their bodies."

The school added, "Teacher J has submitted a written apology, and has also apologized to the parents, who have accepted the explanation."

Teacher J had previously requested a transfer to another region in March; the transfer is scheduled to be finalized as part of the official personnel reassignment process this September.
