[Moscow] Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak met in St. Petersburg in early November. As a result of the meeting, the two countries are expected to move forward with a pipeline project to supply natural gas from Russia to South Korea via North Korea.

 Sources revealed this.

On the 4th, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced the appointment of a new "Ambassador for Economic Affairs on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia," who will be in charge of joint projects with North and South Korea. On October 13, 2011, Russia announced plans to conduct test runs of the railway (Khasan-Rajin section) it had been building in the border area with North Korea. Russia is accelerating its involvement on the Korean Peninsula.

Russia and North Korea decided on a natural gas pipeline construction plan at their summit in August 2011.

Korea Gas Corporation also agreed on a "roadmap" with Gazprom, Russia's state-owned gas company, in September 2011. A consensus between the leaders of Russia and South Korea was required for the project to be realized.
