Have you heard of Park Eun-sun (朴恩善), a former South Korean women's soccer player known as the "female Ronaldinho"?
She possesses power and technique that rivals her male counterparts, and has always performed brilliantly in matches against China, earning her the nickname "China Killer."
There's growing speculation that Park (朴恩善) will return to the national team for the first time in five years for the AFC Women's Asian Cup (May 19-30, China), which also serves as a qualifier for next year's Women's World Cup in Germany, attracting attention in South Korea.
However, Park (朴恩善), with her masculine physique and power, as well as her deep voice, has raised gender suspicions from China.
In a May 9, 2010, interview with a Chinese newspaper, China women's national team coach Shang Ruihua (商瑞華) said he was "shocked" by rumors of Park's return, and that "if Park Eun-sung plays, the AFC will require a gender test," putting a hold on Park's return to the South Korean national team.
It is unclear whether China's backlash had an impact, but Park was not included in the national team roster announced by the Korea Football Association on May 9, 2010.
The South Korean women's national team coach explained, "Park Eun-sung had not undergone normal training for nearly five years, so she was extremely fatigued during practice. I consulted with my coaches and we agreed that allowing her to play in the Asian Cup would have more negative effects than positives."
Korean netizens commented,
"Even in my opinion, she's clearly a man. They should use this opportunity to reveal her gender."
"If she's a man, shouldn't she undergo surgery so she can return as a full man?"
"Did the Korean coach not include her in the national team after China pointed this out? Is it because if she were to undergo testing, it would reveal her male identity?"
"Anyone can see she's a man. If she's really a man, that would be unfair."
Most comments were along the lines of:
"Even in my opinion, there was a comment like, 'I'm a relative of Park, and she's a real woman!'"
However, since she hasn't been tested, the truth is unknown.
South Korea has suggested that China is overreacting.
However, some have also speculated that Park is a “hermaphrodite”!?
The allegations about Park's gender have attracted considerable attention within South Korea.
