On the 9th, a research team led by Dr. Kwon Tae-yeon of the Korea Food Research Institute and Jeong Kyung-ran of the Academy of Korean Studies published "The Story of Chili Peppers," which explains the origins of Korean chili peppers.
They argue that chili peppers were not introduced from Japan, but rather were a plant that had been growing wild on the Korean Peninsula for thousands of years. Multiple Korean media outlets reported this. Chili peppers are said to have been introduced to Japan in the second half of the 16th century, with records indicating they were introduced by Portuguese missionaries in 1542.
The commonly accepted theory in both Japan and Korea is that they were introduced to Korea by Japan during the Japanese Invasion of Korea.
According to reports, the research team collected a variety of theories about chili peppers, including "Our country's kimchi has a history of only 100 years," "Chili peppers are poisonous plants, but we adapted them to suit the tastes of our people," "Kimchi comes from the Chinese character "sincai," and "Chili peppers (pronounced "gochu" in Korean) come from the Japanese word "kosho."
They compared these theories with over 200 records from past documents and pointed out inconsistencies in each theory. The research team focused particularly on the passages in the encyclopedia "Ojuyeonmunjangjeonsango," written by Lee Gyu-gyeong in the 1700s, which states, "A spicy chili pepper called nanbanjiao (Thai chili pepper) was introduced via Japan," and "The chili peppers that have long been in our country are of very high quality.
Gochujang from Sunchang and Cheonan is famous throughout the country." They completely rejected the theory that chili peppers were introduced to Korea from Japan.
Dr. Kwon explained, "As a scientist, I couldn't bear to listen to such far-fetched theories, so I began this research." He added, "Due to incorrect theories such as the one that chili peppers were introduced to Korea from Japan, our country's food culture and history have been distorted and belittled.
This will be an opportunity to correct these incorrect theories."
